How to Use Citation in Your Essay

Every essay must include citation of non-original work.  That means that if you quote, paraphrase or refer to a work other than your own you must credit the author.  There are two common forms of citation

MLA
and
APA

Each is an association that has developed common methods for citing authors' works.  Your teacher will tell you whether he or she prefers either the Modern Language Association style of the American Psychological Association Style.

It can often be confusing when writing an essay to know how to cite a book or a source.  It is best to bookmark this page or one of the guides below and work on a case-by-case basis while you are writing your essay, rather than trying to memorize the complicated formulas.

Here are some websites that will help you learn to cite works in an essay.  Remember- MLA is used most often for literature classes.
